Season
A warm, dry spring led to an early start, followed by a hot summer - the earliest budburst and harvest on record for the Great Southern. Ripening advanced rapidly, and careful timing was essential to preserve balance, freshness, and natural acidity.
Vineyard
From the Mid Block of Moorialup Road vineyard, a gently undulating, north-facing site at 164 metres elevation, and with loam over clay soils. The aspect captures morning sun and avoids the harshest afternoon heat, promoting slow, even ripening and delicate fruit definition. The clay beneath the loam holds moisture for the shallow-rooted Chardonnay vines, building texture and tension. Managed by viticulturist Laura Wishart, this block is planted to the Gin Gin clone - prized for its concentration and finesse.
Vinification
Picked two weeks earlier than usual to retain brightness and drive, whole bunches were gently pressed directly to French oak barriques for wild fermentation with solids. A portion underwent malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and enhance mouthfeel. The wine rested on lees for ten months in oak, followed by a further eight months in stainless steel, integrating structure and freshness before bottling. Time, not intervention, guided the process.
Style
This is a Chardonnay of balance and restraint, where fruit, savouriness, and texture meet in quiet harmony. Notes of white stone fruit, nougat, and flint unfold over a mineral backbone, with length and poise defining the finish.
Cellar
Drink now or cellar carefully until 2035.
